Opening member showcase 6:30: Tye Z
Main Presenter ~ 7:00 pm: Carl Lovell & Karl Sperber
Carl Lovell and Karl Sperber have played in a few different projects over the years. They were most known for the trio Kanjira, featuring Tamaralee Shutt on vocals and trumpet, and where Karl Sperber played several instruments for a new age, world, and jazz flavored sound. This is when they started to experiment with different arrangements of songs. They now continue their style of music as a duo and with their new trio String Therapy with cellist Kristen Kopf. The duo will demonstrate how they put their own spin on songs by focusing on melodic and rhythmic elements. Developing creative composition and backdrop for soloing will also be discussed.
Carl Lovell - Carl Lovell started guitar at 10, with private instructors using method books to read music and chord melody solos. To supplement his learning, he played in his father's quartet and with Liverpool High School jazz and rock bands. Early influences were Count Basie Orchestra, Stan Kenton Big Band, Henry Mancini film scores, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Carlos Santana. He later played in small groups but developed his comping skills from playing with big bands. Opportunities arose to play in many musical theater productions, including Broadway in Syracuse, Merry Go Round Theatre in Auburn , and Syracuse Symphony Pops - 007. Currently, he plays in a r-n-b show band and with Karl Sperber in a duo and with their trio String Theory.
Karl Sperber - Karl began playing guitar in his early teens, and was initially inspired watching Andres Segovia perform on the Ed Sullivan show. Although he is primarily self-taught, he took a number of classical guitar lessons which began the development of his fingerstyle technique. Playing music was a constant avocation throughout his 40 year career as a clinical psychologist. In addition to guitar, he also included some study of (dabbling with) ethnic percussion as well as various wind instruments. His first performances were solo in the singer-songwriter style and later he joined groups Equinox and Kanjira, and began pursuing more jazz styles. He performs in duo format with Carl Lovell and is developing a project including Carl and Kristen Kopf on cello, called String Theory Syracuse.
Breakouts:
Rookies and Rusties – Jim Flynn will lead the group in these songs: To Love Somebody, Love Me Tender, Let It Be Me and Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye. Jimmy sent the song sheets out on Jan. 23. If you need the song sheets with chords, let me know.
Song Circle – Bob Raymonda will lead this month’s song circle. Bring an original or cover to play for the circle.
