About Us

Guitar League (GL) is an educational organization, formed as a community of guitarists of all skill levels (Rookies, Minors & Majors) sharing guitar skills, knowledge, techniques and fun.  There are GL Chapters located in communities around the country.  Each chapter is essentially a "musical club" that meets monthly for an educational and fun experience.  Players of all skill level are invited to bring their guitar (acoustic, since it's an "unplugged" format) and share their skills, stories and tips with fellow players.

Each month features a Special Presenter who shares a particular skill with the full group. Then players adjourn to the Breakout Sessions where we assemble with fellow players of similar skill level in our self-selected "League" (Rookie, Minor or Major).  At the Breakout Sessions, players cover a new topic each month  to gain skills within their ability.  Very inclusive, very safe, very fun. Our motto:  Learn ~ Play ~ Share.”
Growing in the Guitar
League
The "League" idea comes from a Little League baseball metaphor.  With a similar system, we guitar players start with the basics, moving from the Rookies to the Minors and then to the Majors. Effective skill acquisition and sharing occurs at each level. It's all about fun and learning. That said, here is the basic structure of the Guitar League.

ROOKIE LEAGUE - For beginners of all ages.  Kids to adults. Basic chords, scales, arpeggios, strumming, finger picking, etc.

MINOR LEAGUE - Intermediate level skills.  Already knows the basics, but wants to learn varying chord patterns, 7ths, 9ths.  Picking and strumming styles.  Mid-level leads.  Some reading, tabs.  Basic songwriting and recording.

MAJOR LEAGUE - Consisting of "pros" of all levels of experience, ranging from seasoned gigging band members to skilled pros who choose not to play out.  Sharing complex theory and fingering.  Advanced picking styles (Chet Atkins thumb picking).  Advanced leads for rock and jazz guitar.  Performance tips, including stage presence, production, marketing, etc.  Professional song writing, publishing and recording.
A note from Dick Ward:
Guitar players are funny sometimes.
For example many people think that they are not good enough to come to something like the Guitar League. NOT TRUE! We have players of all levels, including folks who only know three chords!

They think we sit around in a circle taking turns. NOT TRUE! The Guitar league is completely different; you never have to play in front of people unless you want to.

Guitar League is a community of over 100 people who love the instrument. We all want to learn to improve our playing and are able to do that as a group, with mutual support.

Come check out the Guitar League. The first meeting is always free and if you are nervous, you don't even have to bring your guitar.
In Good Company
The Guitar League sometimes co-sponsors concert performances from world-class players. We've hosted Tommy Emmanuel, Stephen Bennett, Laurence Juber, John Knowles, Muriel Anderson, and Richard Smith, with more in the works.  We'll keep you posted as new opportunities emerge.  The League site is continually changing, so keep checking in.
